The story of Solace Instruments is profoundly shaped by a remarkable lineage of master luthiers. Our founder, Dave Pauling's path, is intrinsically linked to Vincenzo Trusiano Panormo and his son, Louis Panormo (1784-1862). Louis was a celebrated English luthier, a pioneer, and renowned for adopting the Spanish style of guitar making.
In an extraordinary twist of fate, Louis Panormo emigrated and spent his final years in Orua Bay, New Zealand, not far from where Solace Instruments are crafted today. This powerful ancestral connection, stretching from 17th-century Italian shores through 18th-century London workshops to the coast of Aotearoa, provides a deep-rooted inspiration. It fuels Dave's innate desire to create distinguished instruments, directly linking his modern craft to a storied past of artisan electric guitar making.
This heritage isn't just a footnote; it's a living influence that resonates throughout our workshop. The pioneering spirit, the dedication to acoustic principles, and the pursuit of refined aesthetics championed by luthiers like Panormo continue to guide our hands.
We strive to honour this legacy by creating handmade guitars that are not only exceptional tools for musicians but also pieces carrying a tangible link to the rich history of our craft. The journey from a simple piece of wood to a soulful instrument is a cherished tradition we continue with every Solace custom guitar.
Understanding this legacy enriches the experience of owning a Solace instrument. It is an investment in a story, a piece of history, and an unwavering commitment to the art of lutherie that has been passed down through generations. Now, this profound tradition finds new expression in our New Zealand custom guitars.
